Cory McGee, a Gulf Coast native and Florida Gator, likes to tell the story of her dad, father of four girls.
“He didn’t have any boys. But he made sure to tell us that there was never going to be a boy faster than us on the playground,” she told Mississippi’s WDAM-TV.
McGee, a distance runner from Pass Christian (pronounced cris-chee-ANN), punched her ticket to the Olympics with a personal best in the 1,500 meters: 4:00:67.
McGee, 28, has remarked that Mississippi isn’t widely known for its athletes outside of college football. She was determined to change that in Tokyo.
She has a shot at a medal in the finals of the women’s 1500-meter race in Tokyo on Aug. 6.
